March 13th sees one of the year’s most hotly-anticipated horse racing festivals kick off. That’s right, it’s Cheltenham Festival again. The five day event saw an average of 62,000 people a day converge on the course in 2017, taking in some of the equine world’s finest athletes in competition. On top of the racing, there is also a fantastic atmosphere to immerse yourself in with drinks flowing, sharp-dressed fans and plenty of live music on offer! At The Insurance Emporium, we want you to make the most of the festival so here are our top Cheltenham Festival tips!
1. Grab your tickets in advance! It’s £5 extra on the day so you might be backing the wrong horse if you opt to pay on the door!
2. Dress fancy or fancy dress? There is no official dress code for Cheltenham so it’s up to you what you wear. There are certain areas where fancy dress is banned, so bear in mind that you won’t be allowed in the Club Enclosure if you and your mate come in a pantomime horse outfit!
3. The first day is Champions Day. It features one of the most important hurdle races of the season, the Unibet Champion Hurdle. You could be jumping for joy if your horse comes in here!
4. Because it’s Ladies Day and the feeling’s right! The second day of the festival is Ladies Day and hosts the Ladies Day Competition, known as #ColourMeMarch. The competition is all about adding colour to your outfit and, if you’re judged to be the most vibrant, you could win a Mini One!
5. There’s a Guinness village! That’s a village… of Guinness! As St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on raceday Thursday at the festival, there is plenty of Irish-related fun to be had! On the track, there’ll be The Ryanair Chase and The SunBet Stayers’ Hurdle amongst others to keep the excitement going!
6. Here’s some food for thought! There are plenty of mobile catering units on site, with up to 65 available in 2017, so you shouldn’t find yourself going hungry on the day. There were also five tons of cheese consumed at last year’s festival… un-brie-lievable!
7. Put on your dancing shoes! It might be an idea to leave the high heels and dress shoes at home. There are numerous bands performing across the festival. You’ll likely be on your feet a lot of the day and could find yourself dancing the night away, so sensible shoes could be essential!
8. Gamble responsibly! Many people like a flutter when they head to the races but it might be important to set yourself a budget and limit your spending! Nobody wants their Cheltenham adventure to end in tears, so just try to have some fun and take it easy at the bookies! Check out the BeGambleAware website for more information.
9. The Gold Cup is the big one! The last day of the festival sees some of the sport’s elite take part in The Timico Gold Cup. As one of the most famous races in the sport, competition is likely to be hot for this one! Sizing John, ridden by Robbie Powell, won the race in 2017.
10. Catch it on the box! You don’t have to be down at the festival to enjoy the racing at Cheltenham. There will be plenty of television coverage to enjoy at home. ITV will show all of the action from the course throughout the week!
