Music is a constantly changing, evolving art form. The number of different styles we have seen throughout the centuries is immeasurable. From Handel and Beethoven to Elvis and The Beatles, genre and popularity shifts and adjusts and reverts and recycles. The second half of the 20th century was notable for the dominance of guitar music. Playing live music to an arena full of thousands of people was the bread and butter of bands from the Rolling Stones through to Coldplay.
However, in the mid-90s a new form of music began to gain in popularity. EDM (electronic dance music) and the DJs that play it, sprung from the electronic production of disco and has gone from strength to strength ever since. Nowadays, the true kings and queens of the popular music scene are the DJs. They command the highest fees, receive the most airplay and signpost the future path for music. But who are these movers and shakers? Have a look at our guide to 5 of the world’s best DJs to find out who could be taking you on a musical adventure this summer!
1. Martin Garrix
21-year-old Dutchman Martin Garrix is the hottest new DJ in the world. You’ll have no doubt heard his chart-topping collaborations In The Name Of Love with Bebe Rexha and Scared To Be Lonely with Dua Lipa. He’s been making music since the tender age of 16 and he is guaranteed to carry on delivering the tunes for a long time to come. The EDM wunderkind will be making numerous appearances at global festivals this summer, so make sure you catch him at BST Hyde Park in London, Volt Festival in Sophon, Hungary or Utopia Festival in Munich.
2. Calvin Harris
A cultural behemoth and Britain’s sole representative on this list, Calvin Harris, real name Adam Wiles, has been a bonafide superstar since clocking up his first number one way back in 2009. Since then he has notched up over a dozen top ten hits, such as Summer and Blame featuring John Newman, and two platinum selling albums. With such a star-studded back catalogue and acclaimed live act, it could be well worth catching the Dumfries-born DJ at one of his residency spots at Wet Republic Ultra Pool or Omnia in Las Vegas this summer
3. Diplo
Multi-talented producer, DJ, singer and rapper, Thomas Wesley Pentz is the everyman of EDM. Diplo first rose to fame producing British rapper M.I.A’s debut album Arula in 2005. Since then he has worked with other artists such as Justin Bieber, Ellie Goulding and Usher, in addition to producing chart-topping tracks under his own moniker and as part of side-projects Major Lazer and Jack Ü. Diplo is consistently excellent so make sure to catch him this summer; Creamfields and Hideout Festival in Croatia look to be the stand out events.
4. Martin Solveig
40-year-old Martin Solveig, born Martin Picandet, is a French DJ and producer who has spent the best part of the last two decades honing his art in house music. He has always been prolific with his releases but over the past two years he has really made the next step up in the EDM stratosphere. Fresh off the back of a rapturously received My House residency at Pacha in Ibiza, Solveig has started bothering the top of the charts with tracks like Do It Right and Places featuring Ina Wroldsen. Catch him and his infectious summer vibes at Festival de L’Armor a Sons in Bobital, France or Summerfestival in Antwerp Belgium.
5. deadmau5
You could hardly accuse Joel Zimmerman, better known as deadMau5, of being the shy, retiring type. This is a man who takes to the decks, in front of thousands, wearing a giant mau5head headdress and engages in high profile Twitter spats with fellow superstar DJs such as Skrillex and Diplo. But, beyond the hype, the Canadian is a genuine icon and his progressive and innovative style of house is revolutionising EDM. His live shows can be exhilarating and captivating events, so try and check him out this summer; Benicàssim in Spain and Tomorrowland in the aptly-named Boom, Belgium are the perfect opportunities!
