For some, caravanning holidays are enjoyed from generation to generation. Travelling the breadth of the UK to visit somewhere new each year and seeing how areas change over time. All the while, sharing all the ins and outs of what the next generation needs to know when it comes to towing a caravan so that one day, they can then teach their kids and so on.
We caught up with our customer, John, to find out what touring caravan holidays mean to him and his experience of caravan insurance when he had to make a claim.
First and foremost, John has been caravanning all his life, having been introduced to it as a child through his mum and dad. For him, it’s ‘the sense of freedom and being outside’ that he enjoys the most about it.
With a family of his own, he’s now been able to share the joy of caravanning with them and they love it too.
Of his favourite places he’s travelled to in the UK, John cites the east coast, including Whitby and Scarborough, as some of his most memorable. While Cornwall also got a worthy mention, the narrow roads can make for a more stressful experience if you come up against another car towing a caravan in the opposite direction, therefore it’s more enjoyable out of season.
Choosing Caravan Insurance
Having previously borrowed his parent’s caravan John hadn’t needed to think about caravan insurance. Yet, after they sadly passed away, he and his family decided to buy their own touring caravan in late 2023, which was then put into a secure storage facility in early 2024.
‘We previously borrowed my parent’s caravan so as this was our first caravan, it was an advertisement in the dealership that prompted us to take out caravan insurance with The Insurance Emporium.’
John’s Touring Caravan Insurance Experience
It wasn’t long after their beautiful caravan was put in storage that John was notified that the caravan had been stolen. Liaising with the police he then started his claims experience with The Insurance Emporium. He called and requested a claims form, after that he was able to liaise with The Insurance Emporium’s claims department over email.
Naturally, there has been a lot of back and forth with The Insurance Emporium due to the more complex nature of the claim, but as John says, ‘That’s understandable.’
As this was the first touring caravan he owned, the family were eager for the holidays and memories they would make in 2024 and are naturally devastated to have had their holiday home-from-home taken from them. John says ‘I’d take my caravan in a heartbeat over the money we’ve managed to claim, it’s no substitute for memories our family has missed out on. For this summer we’ve planned a series of Airbnb’s, however later this year we are going to look to buy another caravan and will absolutely take out another insurance policy.’
‘We did everything we could to secure our caravan, we had locks on the wheels, locks on the hitch, and an alarm. Despite all of this, it still wasn’t enough to prevent our caravan from being taken from a secure storage facility.’
As John has said, the theft of his caravan isn’t just about the financial loss, it’s the memories his family were looking forward to making this summer. Our Touring Caravan insurance policies include benefits such as New for Old, Loss or Accidental Damage, European Use, Family cover and more. We’ve recently introduced seasonal pitches and store & stay campsites to our policies offering customers more choice when it comes to where they store their caravans when it is and is not in use.
