Rejoice! It’s that time of year again. Spring is in full swing and the sun is making more than just fleeting appearances. As the glorious (or not so glorious!) summer gets ever closer, there’s a good chance you’ll be making any excuse to get back on to the golf course. A winter break might mean your clubs are due a bit of an upgrade. Perhaps last season’s poor form drove a wedge between you and your selection. Or maybe a flimsy grip resulted in your driver sinking to the bottom of a water hazard. So if you’re considering a new driver for this summer, our rough guide might help you out of the woods.
Callaway GBB Epic Sub Zero
Callaway certainly can’t be accused of not picking a fitting name! The club’s stiffened face helps to generate faster ball speeds and there are two weight slots on the sole. The 12g and 2g weights provided can be swapped around to maximise spin or launch. The 12g also provides a little extra forgiveness when put in the back port. So it really is epic by name, epic by nature – just ask Phil Mickelson and Henrik Stensson!
Ping G
What makes Ping’s G special is its universality. The aerodynamic design and redistributed weight, from top to bottom, will suit a seasoned golfer down to a tee. However, it also has an extra-forgiving face. That means more modest players can feel the club’s full benefits as well. Though it is definitely worth getting it customised to your grip and stance.
Taylormade M1 & M2
The standard you play at is likely going to be a factor when you buy a new driver. Taylormade’s M series clubs highlight that perfectly. The M2 would make a splendid choice for golfers of more wide-ranging abilities. This is because it has a larger area on its face which maintains speed, giving you extra forgiveness. Whereas precision is the name of the game with the M1. It has two adjustable sliders; one controlling shot lift, the other commanding angle.
Cobra King F7
Immensely versatile and innovative. Cobra’s King F7 is a hole in one if you are looking for a quality adjustable driver which won’t break the bank. It has three interchangeable weight positions which allow for a real variety of shots, making it so versatile that it’s almost like having three clubs in one – no wonder Rickie Fowler wields the F7! It also has Cobra Connect technology in the grip, making your shots trackable and shareable via social media.
Mizuno JPX900
Similar to Taylormade’s M1, Mizuno have also gone with a slider. Two 8g weights can be moved up and down it depending on the desired shot. There are also slots for fade and draw bias which can be used by inserting sole weights. It may take a little while to correctly tailor to the individual, but it is widely regarded as one of Mizuno’s best drivers ever. So it must be pretty handy!
It can feel amazing when you unleash that first tee shot of the year straight down the middle of the fairway. Perfect! But like any sport, things do not always go to plan.
