Curation
Before you post your first snap, decide why you’ve signed up for Instagram in the first place! Try to develop a consistent theme for your gallery. If you just take a load of photos and post them all, no one’s going to have a clue what you’re trying to say. Attempting to use your posts to convey a message or feeling will help your followers understand that they’re following you for a good reason.
Understand light
Light is always an important thing to consider in your photos! Working with natural light is usually best, especially for beginners, as it’s not usually as harsh as artificial light or a flash. Staying away from the midday sun can often be a good idea too, so as to avoid any problematic shadows that might disrupt your image. Also, remember exposure. You can always brighten an under exposed image later using editing tools, however an over exposed photo will remain over exposed.
Consider composition
Don’t just take photos and hope for the best! Spend time thinking about the framing and composition of your pictures. Are you looking for a pleasantly symmetrical image? Or would you rather capture people’s imagination with an asymmetric view? Use your phone’s grid feature to ensure you’re getting the right objects in the right places every time you capture a shot!
Use filters
Instagram has a variety of filters that alter the appearance of your images, lending them effects such as oversaturation or more diffused light. Making use of these can really bring your photos to life, as can other photo-editing apps on the market. Remember that sometimes less is more! The best photos are usually edited to enhance the original, not to completely rework it!
Practise
No one was born a natural photographer! The only real way to improve your photography skills is to practise, practise and practise some more. Bearing the above tips in mind, just get out there and hone your skill. Get to know the functions and limitations of your phone until you know what every setting will allow you to achieve.
