In recent years, the selfie has become a social media staple! Sometimes we can hardly refresh our Instagram feeds without someone having taken a fresh snap of themselves. Whether you’re trying to become an Instagram influencer, tailoring your Tinder profile or simply living your best life, taking a picture of yourself isn’t always easy. That’s why, at The Insurance Emporium, we’ve put together our tips on how to take better selfies!
Angle your smartphone
Getting the right angle is crucial for taking a great selfie! For most people, holding the camera up, angled down at your face with your chin slightly down is the perfect selfie pose. Try to not look straight on at the camera, and if possible, angle your phone or camera rather than your face.
Experiment with poses
Whichever social platform you’re planning on posting your selfies, variety is the spice of life! Try taking photos from different angles, with a range of different poses, and try to be a little more animated too. Moving into your poses during your selfie photoshoot can make you look a lot more natural than if you’re straining to get that elusive perfect camera angle!
Don’t get too close!
Ever snapped a selfie and thought it looks nothing like you? That’s because selfies lie. Camera lenses don’t always pick things up like our eyes do; objects closer to the lens can look much larger and more exaggerated. If you’ve ever thought your nose and chin look big in selfies, this is why! An easy way to solve this is to hold your smartphone or camera a little further away from your face. Angles can help alleviate this issue too!
Lighting
Shooting in natural light can make for a much more flattering selfie than those taken with the lights on. Focusing on good lighting can make your face appear brighter and might banish those undereye circles and shadows! Taking photos outside can provide excellent lighting, but if you take selfies inside, try facing a window with natural light.
Use filters… Sparingly
We all know how filters can turn a good selfie into an amazing one. Ever since Instagram first released, people have been obsessing over which filters they can use to make their pictures look professional at the touch of a button. But you can always have too much of a good thing. Everybody can tell when photos are edited and airbrushed, and people don’t need to see you with dog ears on every picture!
Use the rear-facing smartphone camera
The front-facing camera is a great tool that revolutionised smartphone photography in the late 2000s, but sometimes you can benefit from turning your phone around! It might take a few attempts to take a selfie without a screen. But since your phone’s rear-facing camera is often better quality than its front-facing counterpart, this could be the secret to unlocking better quality selfies!
Buy a dedicated camera
If you’re really looking to take your selfie game to the next level, buying a dedicated camera could turn your photo quality up to 11! Buying a camera is a great way to improve the quality of your photographs in general, not just your selfies. From digital to DSLR, mirrorless and instant print, cameras come in all shapes and sizes for a variety of budgets. Just remember, you might have to pair your new camera with a computer if you’re wanting to edit, crop and add filters to your snaps.
Experiment with backgrounds
No matter how on-point your lighting, angles and poses are, taking a selfie in a messy bedroom or a bathroom mirror that needs cleaning is never a good look! If you’re indoors, make sure the area visible in your photo is clean and tidy. Plain backgrounds can quickly become tiresome if you’re taking selfies left, right and centre, so getting shots while you’re somewhere different can add some interest to your photos. Taking selfies while hiking or relaxing on a beach will obviously be a lot more fun!
Take lots of selfies
Do you ever scroll through your Instagram feed and get jealous of all the perfectly posed selfies you see? We guarantee those aren’t first attempts. If you could take the perfect selfie on your first try, we wouldn’t be writing this guide! Take lots of selfies at different angles, with different poses, and you’re sure to find the perfect one to post.
Have fun!
More than anything, always make sure you’re having a good time while you’re taking selfies. If you’re genuinely having fun rather than simply posing, you’ll look more natural, and you’ll end up capturing your best side! Experiment with different poses, take a lot of different photos and don’t take yourself too seriously, and you’ll find you’ve got the perfect selfie in no time!
Now the only thing to do is try it! Grab your phone or camera and start snapping away. We hope this guide helps you capture the perfect picture of yourself and have fun while you’re doing it!
