Cats. They’re both fun, friendly companions and free, independent spirits. As cat owners know, each feline has their own magical personality. It’s no wonder then that these clever and individual animals have inspired so many writers, artists and animators over the years. At The Insurance Emporium, we like cats and we like pop culture. That’s why we’ve made this infographic about some of our favourite fictitious felines from cartoons. See who we picked!
Top Cat
First up is the most effectual Top Cat – or TC to close friends. He’s the leader of a gang of alley cats, always making up schemes to get rich quick and avoid capture by Officer Dibble. Top Cat was created by Hanna-Barbera studios and his cartoon series originally ran in 1961. Since then, Top Cat has featured in comics, books, films and more.
Garfield
The laid-back, lasagne-loving cat started out in a comic strip of the same name, which followed his adventures alongside owner Jon Arbuckle and Odie the dog. Garfield’s animated adventures include a number of television specials, cartoon series Garfield and Friends, CGI series The Garfield Show and Garfield: The Movie.
Duchess
Lead character in Disney’s 1970 film The Aristocats, Duchess is an upper-class house cat who has to find her way home – and get her kittens there safely – after being abandoned in the countryside. Duchess is helped along the way by alley cat Thomas O’Malley, who falls in love with her. She is a loyal creature, as evidenced by her determination to get home to her owner.
Cheshire Cat
He’s one of the most beloved characters from Lewis Carroll’s novel, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and has appeared in various animated film versions of the book. Perhaps the Cheshire Cat’s most famous animated appearance is in the 1951 Disney film Alice in Wonderland. He has also magically appeared elsewhere, such as in CGI in Tim Burton’s 2010 adaptation of Alice in Wonderland.
Tom
Certainly a cat who will persevere, Tom’s struggle to capture Jerry has entertained children for generations. This determined cat and his mouse nemesis were created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera when they were working at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios in the 1940s. Although Tom’s adventures began as shorts, he and Jerry have since appeared in spin-off series, comics, video games and feature-length films. Occasionally, they’ve even worked together!
Sylvester
Another cat well known for antagonising creatures that are smaller than him; Sylvester has been known to chase Speedy Gonzales, Hippety Hopper and, probably most famously, Tweety. The Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies character has also worked alongside Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd and his own son, Sylvester Jr. He was also on the Tune Squad team in the 1997 film Space Jam.
