Here in the UK we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to places to go fishing; from rivers and lochs to beaches and canals, you’re never far away from an idyllic spot to cast a line.
With this in mind and being keen anglers ourselves here at The Insurance Emporium, we’ve put together some of our favourite fishing destinations around the UK.
Scotland – Loch Ken – Dumfries And Galloway
Scotland is a great place to go fishing if you also want fantastic views, whether you want a loch, a river, or a spot on the coast.
Loch Ken is a 14km freshwater loch in Kirkcudbrightshire that’s well known for its roach, perch, bream and pike, some of which are over 20lb. It’s in a spectacular setting and at its northern end it has what every Scottish loch should have; a haunted castle with its very own ghost piper.
You could also check out Loch Lomond, the River Tay and Loch Awe.
Remember to check fishing regulations for Scotland before you head out.
Northern Ireland – Lough Erne – Enniskillen
This is a great location for coarse fishing during the season, which is March to September; you can learn more about fishing seasons in our blog, but you can fish for perch, rudd, pike and roach all year round. Fishing is also allowed from boats.
It’s the second biggest lake system in Northern Ireland and has over 150 islands, although the larger, lower part of Lough Erne is more popular with anglers.
You could also try Spelga Dam, Portrush, and the River Foyle while you’re over there.
Remember to check the fishing guidelines for Northern Ireland.
Wales – Swansea And The Gower Peninsula
Swansea and the Gower Peninsula are great areas to fish as they have such a mix of sea, rivers and lakes. The river Tawe (the Welsh name for Swansea is Abertawe) is known for its brown trout and Gower is popular for rock fishing; it’s one of the best places for bass.
The ponds and lakes local to the area have an abundance of bream, roach, perch and carp, or you could head for the sea to catch cod and whiting.
The River Taff, Llyn Trawsfynydd in Snowdonia, and Amlwch Harbour on Anglesey are also popular places to fish.
England – Raygill Lakes – Yorkshire
Situated on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, Raygill Lakes consists of three lakes that have been formed from a limestone quarry. You can choose from coarse, fly and pike fishing in beautiful, peaceful surroundings, and night fishing is available too.

You’re also spoilt for choice in the Lake District when it comes to finding great fishing spots, and Angler’s Paradise in Devon certainly lives up to its name.
